Anne Lovers Around The World! Part 11: Aneta Sulejewska

Happy Birthday to our friend Aneta! We hope you have a wonderful day!

When I think about my childhood I see myself reading „Anne of Green Gables”. My mother gave it to me and it was the greatest gift I could ever have received. It seems to me that thanks to this book sensitivity to the beauty of the surrounding world was born in me.

My name is Aneta and I live in Poland. In a country whose nature has a lot in common with the nature so beautifully described by Maud. After reading „Anne...” I walked around the nearby forest and fields and I made up my own names for these places. In the footsteps of Anne I even gave myself a floral name. I took in every description and every word from the book with my whole soul. My imagination started to dance when I reached for one of the volumes of „Anne...”.

I tried to find as much information as possible about Maud, but in a time when there was no internet it wasn’t easy. My biggest treasure was a photo of Maud cut from the Polish language textbook.

I also began to write poems — inept, with simple rhymes, but they gave me a lot of joy. Today my inspiration for writing them are beautiful views of PEI, which my friend Bernadeta captures in her photos.

Anne is also often the subject of my other creative activities, like knitting, cross stitching, embroidery. I collect souvenirs connected with her: dolls, books, first Polish editions. When I hear the words „Anne of Green Gables” my heart beats faster! Greetings from Poland!

I believe I was about 10 or 11 years old when I first read Anne of Green Gables. This was in Gdansk, Poland, where I was born. (I now live in the UK.) I remember being completely captivated by Anne Shirley – by her imagination, her poetic nature, her connection to nature and her gratitude – despite (or because?) the hardships of her earlier life. Most of all, though, it was her striving to be kind and striving to understand others that I think captured my soul.
